Getting started
How does CollaBand work?
Someone uploads a demo and drops the link in the band chat. Everyone records their part at home with headphones, on a phone or a computer. CollaBand lines the recordings up precisely and turns them into a video for TikTok, Reels, Shorts or YouTube.
Do I need an app?
No. CollaBand runs in the browser: Safari on iPhone and iPad, Chrome on Android, Chrome, Edge or Safari on a computer. Add the page to your home screen and it opens like an app.
What does it cost?
Nothing. You just need an account with a passkey, so Face ID, fingerprint or your device PIN. No password, no email required.
Recording
Why headphones?
Without headphones the microphone picks up the demo from the speaker, and you hear it twice in the mix. Wired headphones are best.
Do Bluetooth headphones like AirPods work?
Only in a pinch. Bluetooth adds a lot of delay, and as soon as the phone uses the Bluetooth mic, the recording sounds like a phone call. CollaBand detects this and warns you. Wired headphones (USB-C or Lightning too) are much better.
Can I use an external mic or interface?
Yes, and it sounds best. Plug the mic or interface in via USB-C or Lightning before you start the camera. In the step with the level meter you see which mic is recording and can pick another. Set the gain on your interface so the meter doesn’t turn red on the loudest part. CollaBand records without noise suppression or automatic volume, so your sound stays as it is.
What does the latency check do?
Every device has a small delay between what you hear and what gets recorded. Hold one earpiece to the microphone and tap Start: CollaBand measures the delay in three seconds and corrects it in every take. If you switch microphones, check again.
Is there a metronome?
Yes. If the demo has a tempo, you can turn on “Click while recording”. Every take starts with a four-beat count-in.
I only play a solo or the bridge
Choose “Just a part” and mark the section on the waveform. You only record that section and appear in the video exactly then. A solo automatically gets the big stage.
I want to record my part again
Just record again. CollaBand asks whether to replace your previous take. The old one is only deleted once the new one is safely uploaded.
My take isn’t quite in time
After recording, the “Timing” slider moves the take by up to 120 milliseconds, and you can listen before you upload.
Band
How do I invite people?
In the song, tap “Invite the band” and drop the link in your chat. Whoever opens it sees which parts are missing and can record right after signing in.
How many people can play?
As many as you are. There’s no fixed size: new instruments, solos or guest parts can join at any time.
The link went to the wrong person
Whoever started the song can create a new invite link, and the old one stops working. Someone already in the band can be removed via “Show the band”, together with their takes if you like.
How do I leave a band?
At the bottom of the song, “Leave band”. Your takes stay in the song unless you delete them first.
Video and sharing
Which formats are there?
9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 4:5 and 1:1 for the feed, 16:9 for YouTube. Plus three cuts: grid, join-in (whoever plays appears) and auto-cut (the cut follows the beat).
How do I post to TikTok, Instagram or YouTube?
On a phone, “Share” opens the share menu, where you pick the app. On a computer the video is downloaded and you upload it in the app or on the website.
What is the public page?
Whoever started the song can create a page for a finished video, like collaband.com/v/… The link shows a preview in WhatsApp, Instagram and elsewhere, and anyone who opens it sees the video right away, no account needed.
How do I take a video offline?
Everyone who plays in the video can take it offline at any time: in the song under “Public videos” or in your account. The page and the video are gone immediately.
Why can’t I publish a cover?
Covers need a licence from collecting societies (SUISA, GEMA and others). YouTube, TikTok and Instagram have those deals, CollaBand doesn’t yet. Export your cover and post it there; that way the songwriters get paid too. Your own songs, public-domain works (e.g. folk songs) and licensed works (e.g. Creative Commons) can be published.
Who is in the credits?
Everyone who plays, automatically with their instrument. When publishing you say who wrote the music and lyrics and can add more credits: production, mixing, video, arrangement. People with a CollaBand account get a profile page with everything they played on or wrote.
Explore, likes and playlists
How do people find our videos?
“Explore” shows all public videos, newest first or most popular, filtered by genre. If you choose “link only” when publishing, only people with the link see it.
Liking, commenting, reporting
A heart works without an account, once per device. Commenting and reporting need an account. You can pin a comment to a moment in the song; tapping it jumps there. The band can hide comments on its videos.
What happens to a report?
Reports never remove anything automatically. A person decides, supported by an automatic check. If a video is hidden, you see the reason and can appeal once. Many reports in a short time from new accounts count little, so nobody can get rid of a band with fake reports.
Playlists, albums and EPs
Under “Account” you build playlists from any videos and turn your band’s videos into an album, EP or single, with order and description. Every collection has its own page that plays all songs in a row.
Data and account
How long are songs kept?
30 days, then the demo and takes are deleted automatically. You keep the finished video on your device. Published videos stay online until you take them offline.
I have a new phone
Passkeys are usually synced via iCloud or Google, so you simply sign in. Otherwise, the recovery key you got when signing up helps.
How do I delete my account?
At the very bottom of “Account”. This deletes your songs with all takes, your takes in other songs and the public videos you play in.
